Don't miss the private Tour of the Kalmar Nyckel sailing ship, its Education Center, and Fort Christina, next door to its shipyard in Wilmington.
The Kalmar Nyckel is a full-scale re-creation of the colonial ship that brought the first European (Swedish) settlers to Delaware and the Delaware Valley. It has been calledone of the world’s great educational resources. It is a re-creation of a three-masted, square-rigged, gun-armed merchant ship. The original ship was part of Gustav Adolf’s II famous Swedish invasion fleet of 1630, a landmark event of the Thirty Years' war. It then sailed from Gothenburg, Sweden in December 1637 and arrived in North America in March 1638. It made 4 more successive round trips from Sweden, a record unchallenged by any other colonial vessel.
Our Tour will be in three parts:
● Kalmar Nyckel Education Center: Our guide will educate us on all things “maritime” in the “Age of the Sail.”
● Tour of the replica ship "Kalmar Nyckel”: We’ll board the ship and learn what sailing such a vessel was like.
● “Fort Christina”: It was here, at the banks of the Christina River, that the Kalmar Nyckel landed 388 years ago. And it was here that the Swedish & Finnish passengers founded the first American Swedish Colony and named it “New Sweden.”
Note: Optional Lunch before the tour at 11:30am:
